Six

Spring came rolling in revealing the beauty of the grounds around the Serenity Inn. The pond in the rear of the property allowed paddle boating and fishing for the guests. The trees budded cherry blossoms and the birds sang grateful songs. Peace was everywhere but inside of Lindsay, especially every time her glances fused with Chad’s.

Some days she felt she could hardly breathe at just the look of him. But she couldn’t—wouldn’t break her resolve. She refused to allow herself to dwell on the night before the fireplace. Nor about the last night she saw her husband, the incentive for her vow.

While Chad’s glances were hot enough to sear her, he never approached her again, at least not about that. But he did every chance he could about anything else, all while touching her in the barest of manners. It was always just enough to create a longing within her, but not enough to make her break her silence. Who wanted to dredge up a memory like that? Who wanted to remember that someone nearly made her turn into a monster? She shook her head even as she repressed it. She couldn’t bring herself to think on it. Instead, she walked into the gardens and stared up into the sky. There was beauty and newness all around her. This was what she chose to reflect on, even as she hoped that some part of her heart mirrored the beauty around her.

Chad watched her standing out at the edge of the property, just beneath the trees. He held his phone up and snapped a couple of pictures. The sun was aglow all around her, casting highlights throughout her hair. She was poetry in motion and yet she seemed completely unaware. He sucked in a deep breath as his heartbeat sped up. Blatant desire flared within him. Caramel delight was what came to mind as his gaze took her in. He finally made himself turn away.

He glanced down at his watch now. He expected a man named Walter to arrive any minute. He was planning on grooming him for his job. It had been nearly four months and it was clear to him that Lindsay was a natural at this. She had grown so much in her confidence since her first guests. Cook and the others had rallied around her and they were becoming the little family he had anticipated, had hoped for.

Besides, seeing her day in and day out without being able to speak of his true feelings was killing him slowly. He ached for her—ached to touch her and taste her soft lush lips again. To feel her softness against him would be delightful. Yet it was evident with every connected glance that it was something she just wouldn’t allow between them. He had hoped working beside her shoulder to shoulder would build her trust, make her willing to take the leap with him—but there hadn’t been any indication it was ever going to happen.

He paused to swallow what felt like tears gathered in his mouth.
